As a result of College adapting your modules to combine face-to-face on campus and online teaching and learning support, the breakdown of notional learning hours set out under the heading “Technical Requirements” below may not necessarily reflect how each module will be delivered this year. Further details relating to this will be made available by your department and will be updated as part of the student timetable. |

Associated Term:
2024/25 Academic Session
Learning Objectives: The module involves a broad and in-depth study of the invertebrate phyla. The main focus will be on understanding body-plans, how structure relates to behaviour, and evolutionary relationships. The module will also examine invertebrate diversity and ecological importance. The practicals are an integral part of the course, and are designed to introduce techniques relevant to the study of invertebrates. These include experiments, dissection, microscopy, and preparation of whole mounts and staining sections for microscopical study.
Learning Outcomes:
1. compare invertebrate phyla, with emphasis on their structure, diversity, levels of complexity, life styles and evolutionary relationships;
2. demonstrate skills in scientific illustration, microscope use, identification, animal handling, and report writing;
3. stain, mount and interpret microscopic specimens;
4. identify invertebrates to Phylum
5. demonstrate individual competency in the range of laboratory skills associated with the practicals in this course, as detailed in the specific practical schedules.
Required Materials: Click here for the reading list system Technical Requirements: The total number of notional learning hours associated with this module is 150. These will normally be broken down as follows: 20 hours of lectures across 10 weeks 20 hours of laboratory classes across 5 weeks 110 hours of Guided Independent Study Formative Assessment: Moodle Quiz Summative Assessment: Written exam (120 minutes) - 50% Lab report (2000 words) - 50% |
