SN 3118 - Seducing The Nation: Spanish Cinema 1940s To 1980s
Associated Term: 2022/23 Academic Session
Learning Objectives:
In this course students will study films from the Franco regime in Spain and into the Transition to democracy. The films selected will in different ways either express or subvert the ideology and iconography of Francoism. The films will offer a combination of commercial and art-house cinema. We will explore issues such as the representation of gender, family, nationhood and religion, issues of censorship, ideology, iconography and the dynamics of spectatorship. A reading of the films in the course will be conducted through the use of key texts from film theory, as critical tools. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course students will know how to read a film and evaluate it in relation to other Spanish films and to the film industry. They will be able to relate Spanish films to their cultural context They will be able to write about film in an appropriate critical style and demonstrate knowledge of key selected film theories at an advanced level.

Technical Requirements: The total number of notional learning hours associated with this module are 150.
