CR 3034 - Sociology of Religion
Associated Term: 2022/23 Academic Session
Learning Objectives:
The aim of this course is to give an overview of the key arguments in the Sociology of Religion. Also an understanding of the social, cultural and political significance of Religion to the individual, social groups and society at a national and global level. The course begins by covering the classical Sociological theorists on Religion (Durkheim, Weber & Marx) and examines the key debates around Secularisation and Post-Secularisation. The course will then introduce students to the social and cultural significance of New Religious and New Age movements and well as the rise of spirituality in the West. We will also consider the growth of Fundamentalism around the world. Finally we will consider how religion in becoming Globalised. Banned combinations: A student cannot take the 3rd year version of the Sociology of Religion if they have already taken the 2nd year version. Learning Outcomes: 1. Critically evaluate the classical social theorists analyses of religion 2. Describe the diversity of different forms of religion and their social consequences 3. Critically explain the changes in religious belief and organisation 4. Critically analyse the social significance of fundamentalism in the contemporary world
Required Materials:
Technical Requirements: The total number of notional learning hours associated with the course are 150. These will normally be broken down as follows: 10 hour(s) of Lectures across 10 week(s) 10 hour(s) of Seminars across 10 week(s) 130 hour(s) of Guided Independent Study Formative Assessment: - Summative Assessment: Essay 3,000 words
