CR 1011 - Introduction to Criminology
Associated Term: 2022/23 Academic Session
Learning Objectives:
This course offers a general introduction to criminology providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the development of criminology as a discipline and the fundamental themes, concepts and theories that underpin the subject. In Autumn Term students will learn how to think and write like a criminologist as well as developing practical skills to critically explore and analyse crime patterns and media representations of offending. In Spring Term focus will move to explaining criminality and students will be introduced to key theoretical perspectives that seek to understand criminality through sociological and psychological frameworks. Classical criminological theory will be applied to contemporary society and students will develop an understanding of the relevance and legacy of key schools of criminological thought. Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate an appreciation of criminology as a discipline and how it has developed through time; 2. Apply classical criminological theory to understand crime and deviancy in contemporary society; 3. Demonstrate an understanding of social patterns in crime and processes of criminalisation; 4. Analyse media representations of offending.

Technical Requirements: The total number of notional learning hours associated with course are 300. These will normally be broken down as follows: Lectures 20 hrs Seminars 20 hrs Guided Independent Study 260 hrs Formative Assessment: Essay (1000 words) Summative Assessment: Essay 45% 1600 Words Open book online exam 50% 23 Hours Presentations 5% 5 Minutes
