DT 2201 - Theatre & Text: Staging the Real
Associated Term: 2021/22 Academic Session Learning Objectives: Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course students should be able to: 1 Engage with questions about the relationships between text, textuality and theatre practice 2. Apply skills in independent research, gathering appropriate evidence, and communicating ideas 3. Work collaboratively, sharing responsibility, delegating, and where appropriate leading teams 4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of critical debates in the field of documentary and reality-based theatre 5. Demonstrate an informed awareness of the aesthetic and political possibilities of 'staging the real' 6. Mobilise and apply theoretical understanding in the process of performance-making Course Summary: Building on DT1200 Theatre & Text, this course engages with theatre texts, and relations between text, performance and the social world. From the naturalist stage of the late nineteenth century to contemporary verbatim performance, theatre practitioners have frequently sought to represent social reality in order to critique it. This course explores the methods and implications of theatre’s ‘reality-effects’ and considers why it is that so many theatre companies and practitioners in the twenty-first century have turned to documentary, tribunal, verbatim and other forms of reality-based performance-making. The courses explores a contrasting range of plays and performance texts from around the world, and builds a strong awareness of the politics, possibilities and limitations of ‘staging the real’. In the first half of the course, students will explore a range of approaches to the staging of documentary theatre material around the world in the twenty-first century; they will also develop an understanding of the theoretical implications and historical traditions of ‘staging the real’. Throughout the course, students will explore verbatim theatre both critically (through discussion and essay writing), and creatively (exploring theatre texts through workshops, rehearsals, and performances).
